Operator comparison

Which sunbed reservation system fits your hotel?

Replace the morning towel race with a time-slot reservation guests make in the phone browser, and a live operations view staff already have on shift.

That's the short answer. The longer one is below — what "solving" the towel-wars problem actually requires, and which route through this category fits your property.

Is this the right kind of product for you?

Best fit for

Hotels and resorts that want QR access, time-slot rules, and a staff-facing operations view.

Usually not needed for

Properties that only want consumer day-pass demand generation rather than hotel-side operational control.

What differs between the kinds of product

The columns are kinds of product, not individual companies. Naming vendors dates a page within a week and tells you less than knowing which sort of thing you are looking at. Within a column products differ, and sometimes we could not establish a capability either way; we mark both cases ~ and you should check them in a demo rather than take our word for it. Read it as a category guide and a demo checklist rather than a scorecard: the useful part is the question in each cell. Last reviewed 14 October 2026.

Reading the table. ✓ part of the standard product · ~ either it differs between products in that column, or we could not establish it either way — check it in a demo · ✗ not what that kind of product is for. Rows that ask what or where rather than whether are described, not scored. The five shaded rows are the ones we built the product around. Only the direct-booker window is one we have not seen offered at all; on the rest, a ~ in the other columns means we could not establish it either way. Treat all five as your demo checklist rather than as our exclusive — everything else in our column exists in some form elsewhere, and we would rather you knew that before the demo than after it.

Where we are not the answer. We do not post charges to the room folio and we do not connect to your PMS. If either is a requirement, Vendor C — or Vendor B with a PMS connection — is the category to evaluate, and we will say so on the call. Verify the integration and the posting workflow with them before you commit.

The problem — and what "solving" it actually means

Hotel guests reserving sun loungers by throwing towels on them at 6 a.m. — colloquially the "sunbed wars" — is one of the most common complaints in resort review data. It rewards early risers, leaves loungers visibly occupied but physically empty, and generates recurring front-desk disputes.

Not every product called a "sunbed reservation system" actually changes that pattern. Many offer only crude full-day or half-day blocks — a guest reserves a lounger for the morning or the whole day, occupies it briefly, and the bed sits empty for the rest of the time anyway. The dispute just moves from the deck to the booking screen, and the early-morning race can turn into a midnight race for tomorrow's slots.

Solving the problem in a way guests notice usually takes three things working together:

Granular time slots

Not full-day blocks. A lounger that’s free for two hours can actually be re-booked instead of held all day.

Live availability

Guests see what’s open before they walk to the deck — not “reserved” labels they only find out about on arrival.

Multi-zone configuration

“Main pool taken, quiet zone still open” is visible up front, and zones with different demand patterns can have different rules.

Add a hotel-side operations view (overrides for VIPs, weather closures, group bookings) and you have something that fixes the guest behaviour, not just the booking interface. Hotel-side systems differ widely on all four — which is what the comparison table above sets out.

Five questions worth asking every vendor, including us

The answers separate these products faster than any feature list, and you can get all five in a ten-minute call.

  1. What happens to a reservation nobody turns up for — and how does the system know they did not turn up? If a vendor offers an automatic release, ask what triggers it. If it depends on a guest being checked in, ask who does the checking in, what happens on a busy Saturday when nobody scans, and whether a guest who is lying on the lounger but was never scanned loses their booking. With TowelsOn, staff release a no-show’s reservation manually; a reservation never expires on its own for non-attendance.
  2. How finely can the day be cut, and can we change it mid-season? A fixed morning/afternoon pair and a configurable set of bands behave very differently once August arrives.
  3. What does a guest have to give you before they can book — and whose record is it afterwards? An email address typed into a vendor’s form lands in a system they run. Ask who controls that record and who processes it, where it is stored, under whose contract, and what your data-processing agreement with them says.
  4. Does any of this need a connection to our PMS to go live, who runs that project, and what does it cost? Integration is genuinely useful if you need charges on the room bill. It is also usually the largest item in the timeline.
  5. Can you show it running on our own pool layout, live, before we sign? Not a slide and not a recorded walkthrough — your deck, your zones, your rules. A vendor who can do that answers most of the other questions along the way.
